A group of four local children competed in the Canadian B.A.S.S. Casting Kids Competition at the
Toronto Spring Fishing Show on Saturday February 19th, 2005.  This competition is to select the
best Canadian children with highest scores three common skills of fishing; flipping, pitching, and
casting.  There is only one child selected to represent Canada from each of the 7 -10 years and 11-
14 years age groups.  The two children who represent Canada at the North American competition
are competing at the chance to win a $10,000US scholarship to any college or university of their
choice in the world.

All four of the Kingston children were in a final cast off for the title as best Canadian Kid.  The 7-10
years group had a three way tie and the 11-14 years group had a five way, all for first place.  They
were competing against a group of sixty qualified children from all over Canada.

In the 7-10 age group, 9 year old Alyssa Frankland walked away with a 3rd place finish and 9 year
old Josh Giroux walked away with the 2nd place finish.  In the 11-14 age group, 11 year old
Matthew MacPhail walked away with a 4th place finish.  All kids received an assortment of fishing
equipment and tackle for their efforts.

All the kids had been practicing very hard for the event and worked hard for what they achieved.
We would like to send out a huge thank you to the Royal Military College Cadet Mess for allowing
the kids to practice in their gymnasium for the last four weeks.  Without the large space that they
needed to practice they would have never made it as far as they did.

The Eastern Ontario Bassmasters will be holding four qualifying events in the Kingston area this
year.  April 2nd and 3rd at the Kingston Outdoors Show, April 27th at the Boys & Girls Club Of
Kingston, May 28th at the Kid’s Perch Derby in Portsmouth Harbour, and on August 21st at
Singleton Lake Campground near Lyndhurst.  There will also be a CastingKids Competition held on
the weekend of August 27th and 28th in Belleville when the Ontario B.A.S.S. Federation hold their
10th annual fishing competition for adults called the Provincial Qualifier for Team Ontario 2006.

The best thing about all of this is that it is all FREE for all kids to enter and move on to the
CastingKids Championships.
